About 1 in 8 Billion
A different birthplace. A different set of chances. One life to follow.
An independent place to play
1in8b.net is an independently operated edition of 1 in 8 Billion, a browser life simulation. This website is operated separately from the original 1in8b.life project; we do not present this site as the original creator’s official website. Questions about this edition, its content, privacy, accessibility, or technical problems should be sent to contact@1in8b.net.
What the experience explores
The simulation begins with a birthplace and circumstances you did not choose. As time moves forward, school, work, relationships, health, money, and random events shape a fictional life. You make decisions when the game offers them, or use Auto mode to watch a life unfold. Birth mode draws from births; population mode draws from people alive. Historical and future settings use the model’s time-dependent data and projections.
The game includes statistics for 172 countries. Country pages make the model’s inputs easier to compare, including births, life expectancy, schooling, income, and health indicators. The underlying data references include United Nations population estimates, WHO, the World Bank, and other named international sources. Country pages identify their source families and explain that some missing values use estimates or regional averages.
How to read a simulated life
A national average is a starting point for a model, not a description of every person living there. The simulation compresses complex societies and personal experiences into a limited set of variables. Random events can produce unusually fortunate or difficult outcomes. A single playthrough cannot establish what a country, culture, family, disability, or individual is like.
The purpose is to invite curiosity about differences in opportunity and circumstance. The game does not predict your own future, rank the value of people’s lives, or replace research about a place. When a topic interests you, follow the country page’s source references and consult the underlying publication.
Credits and this edition
The original game’s code, interface, pixel scenes, simulation mechanics, and assembled data originate from the 1in8b.life project. This edition retains that creative origin while providing its own domain, contact, hosting, public community storage, privacy information, and explanatory guides. The memorial collection includes an authorized archive from the original project. New submissions are part of this site’s independently operated community.
The bundled typefaces retain their source notices, including SIL Open Font License notices in their stylesheet. Individual datasets, fonts, code, and artwork can have different rights. The availability of this website is not a general permission to copy or redistribute those materials. Rights holders can contact us with the relevant URL and a clear description of their request.
